Neuhaus Meets China’s Need for CBT

Dr. Neuhaus gave a standing-room only, two-day workshop on his Flexible CBT Approach.

Dr. Edmund Neuhaus, author of The Flexible CBT Approach offered through TRi Behavioral™ (www.tribehavioral.com), and from McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was warmly received as he presented his innovative work at the 1st Chinese CBT Conference in Nanjing, China, and at the Shanghai Mental Health Center Hospital.

As the only western attendee, Dr. Neuhaus joined China’s top Psychotherapists and academic psychologists (both CBT informed and non-CBT) at this 1st Chinese CBT conference organized by Dr. Zhang, Vice President of the Nanjing Brain Hospital. Dr. Zhang’s hope, which was realized, was to raise awareness about CBT and begin a new dialogue about the place of CBT in mental health programs and psychotherapy.

Senior clinicians as well as graduate students actively participated and displayed a great interest for learning CBT and how it can be flexibly applied to a wide range of patients. With expert interpreters (and many in the audience understanding English) the presentations and discussions went smoothly at a high intellectual level. Dr. Neuhaus also delivered a keynote address about his perspective of CBT in North America — current research, clinical applications, and training.

As the largest psychiatric hospital in China (1800 beds), the Shanghai Mental Health Center has great interest in the most cutting edge treatment approaches to meet the needs of their varied and complex patient population. Dr. Neuhaus delivered what they had hoped, as he presented on anxiety disorders and Borderline Personality Disorder, as well as providing case consultation to the psychiatrists there.

It appears that Dr. Neuhaus will be busy traveling to China in the coming years as representatives from each venue want him to return and teach his CBT approach to a wide range of psychiatrists, academic psychologists, psychotherapist, and counselors. He will likely be returning soon to the Shanghai MHC to train their psychiatry staff in his Flexible CBT approach. Neuhaus, with the assistance of some of his expert colleagues, will also provide specialized CBT training in OCD, anxiety disorders, borderline personality disorders, eating disorders, and psychotic disorders. Neuhaus states: “China is at a crossroads in their intellectual history to advance the mental health field for the next generation, and CBT fills a void for them. My new Chinese colleagues have great respect for ideas, and show an incredible diligence to learn the most current evidence-based treatment approaches.”
